Mastery Series Scope & Sequence

Nursery, Preschool and Kindergarten Mathematics & Phonics

The Mastery Series Scope & Sequence provides a clear view of what children learn and how learning develops progressively across Nursery, Preschool and Kindergarten.

The scope identifies the major areas of learning addressed across the series. The sequence shows how children's knowledge and skills develop from foundational experiences in Nursery, through development and application in Preschool, to increasingly advanced integration, reasoning, early reading and writing in Kindergarten.

A Connected Curriculum from Nursery to Kindergarten

The Mastery Series is designed so that learning develops across levels rather than beginning again each year.

Nursery establishes the foundation.

Preschool develops and applies the foundation.

Kindergarten integrates and extends the foundation into increasingly advanced Mathematics and early literacy.

Across Mathematics, children progress from experiencing numbers, quantities, colors and shapes toward representing, comparing, ordering, measuring, operating and reasoning mathematically.

Across Phonics, children progress from recognizing letters and hearing sounds toward analyzing sounds within words, blending sounds, reading and writing simple words, recognizing rhyming relationships and word families, and using developing literacy skills for meaning and communication.

This developmental continuity provides teachers, administrators and curriculum leaders with a clear view of what children learn, how expectations increase, and how each Mastery Series level prepares children for the next stage of learning.
